What is a home funeral?
A home funeral is defined by the National Home Funeral Alliance (NHFA) as a family or community-directed after-death care from the time of death through the final disposition; it may occur in the home, nursing home, hospital or other setting; it may or may not include professional assistance; it may or may not include a vigil, ceremony, or memorial service.
Prior to the 20th century, most after-death care including funeral arrangements, were completed at home by the family. Planning included after-death care of the body and a vigil / wake for friends to visit the home to offer condolences prior to burial. In today's world, after-death care has been delegated to professional funeral directors.
